Community Traditions
Some towns are remembered for their landmarks.
Oak Glen is remembered for its traditions.
Here, the calendar is more than a schedule of events. It's the rhythm of a community—gatherings that mark the seasons, strengthen friendships, and quietly remind people where they belong. Long after the decorations are packed away and the chairs are folded, these moments become the stories families tell for generations.
HIGH SCHOOL REUNIONS
Oak Glen High graduates have a remarkable habit of finding their way home. The reunions are held in the old gym, decorated with more enthusiasm than budget, and filled with people who swore they weren't coming—until they did.
Old friendships pick up mid-conversation. Old stories somehow improve with every telling. And every so often, someone looks across the room and realizes life may still have another chapter waiting to be written.
THE SINGING CHRISTMAS TREE
If there is one event that truly belongs to Greater New Hope, it's the Singing Christmas Tree.
Every December, the sanctuary transforms into something magical. Choir members gather on a towering, tree-shaped platform draped in lights and greenery, their voices rising in celebration of Christ's birth. What began decades ago as a modest church program has become one of Oak Glen's most cherished traditions.
Families arrive early to find their favorite pews. Former residents plan trips home around the performance. Children who once stood on the lowest risers return years later with children of their own, continuing a tradition that spans generations.
For many in Oak Glen, Christmas doesn't truly begin until the lights dim, the first notes fill the sanctuary, and the Singing Christmas Tree comes alive once again.
Over the years, the tree has witnessed reunions, quiet prayers, unexpected homecomings, and more than a few love stories. Some people leave with joyful hearts. Others simply leave stronger than when they arrived.
Like so much of Greater New Hope's history, the Singing Christmas Tree is about more than music. It's about community. It's about tradition. It's about remembering that some things are always worth coming home for.
In Oak Glen, traditions have many voices—but none are more beloved than those rising from the Singing Christmas Tree.
THE COUNTY FAIR
When the county fair arrives, so do generations of Oak Glen families. The air smells of funnel cakes, sawdust, and summer. Children chase blue ribbons while grandparents compare prize tomatoes and neighbors catch up between livestock barns and Ferris wheel rides.
For most families, the fair isn't about the attractions. It's about returning to the same place, with the same people, year after year—making one more ordinary memory that someday becomes the one everyone remembers.
YOUTH RETREATS
Every summer, a bus full of Oak Glen teenagers heads for the mountains—sunburned, overcaffeinated, and convinced this year will be different. It usually is.
Friendships deepen around campfires. Faith grows in quiet conversations beneath the stars. River rocks are marked with Scripture and tucked into pockets, only to be rediscovered years later when they're needed most. For four girls who grew up in Oak Glen, one summer retreat planted seeds that would take decades to bloom.
